We’ve already professed our awe and adoration for “Orange is the New Black” breakout star Ruby Rose. But a new interview in which the Aussie native opens up about her journey toward self-identity and self-acceptance has us singing her praises even more.
The 29-year-old discussed her gender fluidity with Access Hollywood, admitting that even as a young child, she was so sure about not being completely comfortable identifying as a woman. So much so, in fact, that she had her mind set on gender reassignment surgery when she was just five years old.
“I had this jar that I would pledge dollars… towards this surgery that I didn’t really know a lot about,” she said. “I think I’d seen a daytime documentary or something on Oprah and I was like, ‘That’s what I’m going to do.’ And so I started saving from probably the age of five.”
Rose came out at the age of 12, but it wasn’t until she was a teenager that she began to embrace her identity by changing her appearance to reflect her true self.
“When I got to 15, I kind of decided to get more into my body,” she explained. “I shaved my head and my mom was just like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on right now, but if you are happy, then do it.’ And I started to change the way that I dressed and talked, and realized that I didn’t want to transition, I just wanted to feel more comfortable in my own skin.”
Rose’s style has earned her comparisons to celebs as diverse as Angelina Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Justin Bieber (whom she recently hung out with), but the actress admits she doesn’t entirely see the resemblances.
“I have to say, it’s so strange because I love Justin, I love Angelina, and I really love Leo, but none of those three people look the same,” she said. “I would say I definitely dress the most like Justin. I would like to think it would be Angelina because I’m pretty obsessed with her.”
Speaking of celeb obsessions, Rose also fessed up to her “best friend crush” on Taylor Swift, but admits the person she really wants to bond with is Caitlyn Jenner.
While discussing the growing attention and acceptance surrounding the LGBTQ community — thanks to people like Jenner — Rose said, “I just really feel so blessed to be alive and even part of this huge movement. And Caitlyn, call me! I mean, I’m busy but I want to hang out! You’re awesome!”
