Greeks Voted ‘No’ And Now Things Could Get Seriously Bad, For Everyone

The Risky Maneuver Could Backfire On The Nation’s P.M.

Millions of Greek voters followed Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ suggestion that they vote "no" to further European Union austerity measures on Sunday by a 61-38 vote. Now, unless he can convince the EU to talk about better lending terms for his country, Greece might get booted from the Union and be forced to return to its own currency, which could lead to financial disaster and a possibly bankruptcy that might throw world markets into a tailspin.

At this point, it’s not even clear if Greek banks can re-open on Tuesday, because many are about to run out of cash. Amidst the chaos, Greece’s outspoken finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, resigned just hours after the vote. At press time, finance ministers said they would only consider a third bail-out if Greece agrees to the EU’s strict terms. If things don’t work out, the nation’s economy could tank, with hyperinflation creeping in, banks becoming insolvent and economic productivity could drop off sharply.

Debate Over Confederate Flag Continues In S.C.

South Carolina’s general assembly will reconvene on Monday (July 6) to discuss how to deal with the controversy over the Confederate flag flying over the statehouse. Following the uproar over the Civil War relic that was sparked following the murder of nine parishioners at a church in Charleston last month, officials have to decide whether to replace the flag or remove it entirely. Both houses of the S.C. legislature are controlled by Republicans and there could be a vigorous debate over the issue. Meanwhile, a controversial statue at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill of a Confederate soldier, "Silent Sam," was vandalized over the weekend with phrases including: "Black Lives Matter," "KKK" and "Murderer." In Albert Lea, Minnesota, a volunteer firefighter was suspended for flying a Confederate flag from the back of a fire truck during a "Third of July" parade.

Abby Wambach Shared Her World Cup Win In The Greatest Way

In case your phone died and you slept late and haven’t talked to a single human being since 7 p.m. last night, the U.S. women’s team absolutely crushed Japan in the World Cup final on Sunday, 5-2. One of the team’s emotional leaders and the leading international goal scorer in history, Abby Wambach, celebrated the victory by running over to her wife, Sarah Huffman, and giving her a long, sweaty hug.

Quick Take 1: Burt Shavitz, the bearded, free-spirited co-founder of Burt’s Bees, died over the weekend at age 80. Beekeeper Shavitz founded the company in 1984 with artist Roxanne Quimby after she met him while hitchhiking and used his beeswax to make candles she sold at craft fairs.
