Parental revenge plots pretty much always blur the balance between right and wrong, luring even the most pacifist viewer into a fit of fist-pumping for blood and rooting for the nastiest form of vengeance -- because who wouldn't leap past the line to stick eye for eye to the guy who hurt your kid? Tricky business.
In "The Secret In Their Eyes," Julia Roberts plays an FBI agent named Jess whose close-knit squad is called out to the scene of a murder, only to discover it's her own teenage daughter who's been brutally killed. And she has to sit back and watch as the guy who did it (we think?) gets to walk on a technicality.
So, of course she wants to hunt him down and do what her "Steel Magnolias" mom Sally Field did to Kiefer Sutherland in "Eye for an Eye" -- that is, take justice into her own hands.
Which means ferocious Julia is coming out to play in this film, and that alone pretty much guarantees it's going to knock all the socks off. She might as well go ahead and start clearing a space on her trophy shelf now.
Oh, and did we mention Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow, also star in the film? 'Cause, you know, they're a pack of BFDs themselves. Essentially, this movie's cast list reads like an Academy luncheon invite roster. Even writer-director Billy Ray just got some Oscar nom love for his 2014 drama "Captain Phillips." So, definitely keep this one in your sights.
"Secret," which is an adaptation of the 2010 Oscar-winning foreign-language film, "El Secreto De Sus Ojos," hits theaters on Oct. 23.
