The great thing about dogs is that they’re beautiful even when they’re not beautiful.
At least, that’s the spirit and attitude behind the World’s Ugliest Dog contest, which, yes, is an actual event that held its 27th ceremony on Friday (June 26) in Petaluma, Calif.
The top prize went to 10-year-old Quasi Modo, a mutt with spinal birth defects that has left her slightly hunchbacked. The pit bull-Dutch shepherd mix and her owner took home a whopping $1,500 prize, beating out 25 other dogs in the contest that welcomes and awards imperfection.
According to her biography on the contest’s website, Quasi Modo was abandoned at an animal shelter before being adopted by a veterinarian in Loxahatchee, Fla.
"My appearance can be a little unsettling to some (I have had grown men jump on top of their cars to get away from me because they thought I was a hyena or Tasmanian devil) but once they get to know me I win them over with my bubbly personality," her biography says. Awww!
Quasi Modo may have walked away with the top prize, but rest assured there were plenty of other worthy contenders. Let’s take a look at some of the ugly-but-not-award-winning-ugly dogs in attendance:
