Justin Bieber Pleads Guilty To Careless Driving And Assaulting Paparazzo

The charges stem from a 2014 ATV accident involving Bieber and then-girlfriend Selena Gomez.

Justin Bieber pleaded guilty to assault and careless driving charges in an Ontario court Thursday (June 4).

The charges stem from a September 2014 incident in which Bieber was arrested for crashing his ATV into a minivan driven by a paparazzo near his hometown of Stratford, Ontario. Police said Bieber then “engaged in a physical altercation” with the paparazzo. Selena Gomez, his girlfriend at the time, was with him during the incident.

The 21-year-old has been sentenced to a $750 fine for careless driving, and an absolute discharge on assault — meaning he was found guilty but will not face any conviction. An additional charge of dangerous driving was dismissed as part of a plea deal.

Bieber did not attend the verdict in person, but was there via video link. Joseph Brean, a reporter from Canada’s National Post live-tweeted the verdict, saying Bieber was “standing politely with his hands folded, wearing white dress shirt, in front of two dreary paintings.”

Brean reported that the judge presiding over the case had an important message for Bieber: “think before you act.”
