Logic was beaming.
Following his first festival performance ever at Soundset Sunday (May 24), the Under Pressure MC had reason to smile. After all, he had just rocked a rain-filled stage in front of 30,000 screaming fans. But that wasn't the only cause of Logic's joy. As we found out, he's also been pleased with the direction of his next project.
"I’ve been working [on it] for about a year and a half now,” he told MTV News after his set. "Obviously, it’s the next album. Mixtapes have treated me incredible, but I feel like I’ve matured and I’ve grown to where I just want to drop albums now.
"It’s not going to come out until 2016," he continued. "I’m gonna pace myself. I’m just gonna chill. I’m just making music, having a good time."
Things were a bit different when Logic crafted his conceptual debut LP, Under Pressure, which detailed strained relationships with family members and other past hardships. “Where I came from was a very f--kin’ dark place,” he said. "However, that’s behind me now. I already did that album. That’s it. Now, I’m just having a f--kin’ blast.
"The music is upbeat," he continued. "It's happy. It’s awesome. It’s about what’s going on in my life right now. So, yeah, they can expect some sh-t to have fun to. They can expect some deep joints - always that - because there’s always something to get off my chest. But for the most part, I’m just having a blast. I’m very happy.”
That joy has allowed Logic to work on a project that he feels is not only more cheerful than his critically acclaimed debut, but superior, too. "When I released Under Pressure, I was like, ‘Wow. I’m on top of the world. Def Jam, major release, this sh-t is crazy,’” he said. "Now, I’m like, ‘Oh, sh-t. Where I was when I released that album, it ain’t f--kin’ with where I am now. I’m at peace in the moment."
There’s one more reason for Logic’s current mood: The RattPack MC is engaged. "I think it’s just something I’ve always wanted,” Logic said. "I was just waiting for the right person."
So, how did Logic pop the big question?
"I did it in a photo booth,” he said. "It was pretty epic. It’s just a spot that we both went to. She took me there. It was real special to her. She took me there on one of our first dates. We went back again and when the photo booth counted down - 3, 2, 1- I pulled out the ring and got it on film.”
With wedding bells and a new album on the horizon, it's looking like Logic's about to make his happiest project ever, even if the LP is still in its early stages.
"I’m not getting too much into my second album,” he explained. “But what I will say about it is that I’m at my most happiest that I’ve ever been in my life."
