This year’s Song of the Summer race is already well underway and the competition is fierce. In our poll from earlier this week, Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea’s “Pretty Girls” is commanding the top spot, but Fifth Harmony’s “Worth It” is inching close behind. But now, it looks like a new contender has entered the ring... and it’s eagerly vying for the top prize.
On Friday (May 15), Maroon 5 released a new song and lyric video for “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like A Motherf****r.” Besides its obvious intriguing and fitting title (anything with the word “summer” in it is automatically a win, amirite?), the song is also catchy as a motherf—ker. Veering even further from their funk-rock roots, the new track finds Maroon 5 navigating into synth-pop territory, complete with a hooky, shout-a-long chorus that bites... HARD.
With his trademark falsetto in full force, frontman Adam Levine croons bitterly about a self-involved girl with a body that’s hot as summer and a mind as sharp as diamonds; she dances in the streets and drinks champagne on the beach, and — much to his own dismay — Levine can’t help but be fascinated by her. “I check my phone when I am weak/She never posts anything deep/Cuz she’s so fancy,” he sings scathingly.
Yes, the sentiment’s kinda strange, but you’ll hardly be paying attention to the words when its equally as odd lyric video starts rolling. The clip is basically a summer-themed edition of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” or “Ridiculousness,” piecing together vintage clips of summer fun gone awry. This vid’s got it all: a chicken on a skateboard, a dog on a surfboard, a dude riding his motorcycle into the ocean, and one heck of a painful-looking bellyflop competition.
Check out the fun video below and just TRY to resist singing this song for the rest of the day, we dare you.
