37 'Game Of Thrones' Deaths, Ranked By Shock Value

Heads will roll.

"Valar morghulis." Those words echo throughout "Game of Thrones," and they're lived up to week in and week out. It doesn't matter if you're a poor little butcher's boy or the leading man of the entire series — if you play the game of thrones and you don't win, then you die. No middle ground.

Behold, our bloody walk down memory lane of all the great "Game of Thrones" deaths, ranked by shock value. Mind the guts and gore.

  1. Robert Baratheon
    HBO

From the moment we laid eyes on King Robert, we knew he wasn't going to make it very far. What good is a game of thrones with the same king wearing the crown the whole time?

  2. Kraznys Mo Nakloz
    HBO

"Dracarys." And with that, Daenerys pulled the trigger on the double-cross everyone hoped and expected to see. If she HADN'T commanded Drogon to roast the Astapor slaver alive, we all would have rioted.

  3. Karl
    HBO

Sword through the back of the head and out the mouth was one of the show's gnarliest deaths, but of course this guy was going down.

  4. Locke
    HBO

Likewise, neck-break at the hands of Bran-by-Hodor was a shocking move, but Locke himself was destined to die the moment he chopped off Jaime Lannister's hand.

  5. Craster
    HBO

Yet another man with a ticking clock over his head from the minute we met him. The Night's Watch wanted to do this for years.

  6. Jeor Mormont
    HBO

The bigger shock than his actual death, was his skull being used as Karl's new goblet. Gross.

  7. Yoren
    HBO

Arya's Night's Watch pal was being set up to be a new Ned Stark of sorts. So much for that.

  8. Lysa Arryn
    HBO

Catelyn Stark's sister sailing through the Moon Door is probably something "Thrones" fans were waiting for as soon as both the character and concept were introduced.

  9. Jory Cassel
    HBO

    Jaime, man. What an a--hole.

  10. Rodrik Cassel
    HBO

    THEON, man. What an a--hole!

  11. Maester Luwin
    HBO

Another Theon casualty, if an indirect one. Kind of like killing Yoda in season two.

  12. Septa Mordane
    HBO

Her severed head on a pike in King's Landing, not pictured here, is one of the most unsettling images of the series.

  13. Tywin Lannister
    HBO

Given everything he unleashed in his life and on "Game of Thrones," Tywin's time was coming. Tywin going out while taking a dump? THAT was a legitimate shock.

  14. Shae
    HBO

Tyrion killing his own lover with his own two hands was a very unexpected look for our favorite Lannister.

  15. Ygritte
    HBO

    Olly. How could you.

  16. Renly Baratheon
    HBO

Lord of Light, kill Renly in the night, Shadow Stannis…

  17. Viserys Targaryen
    HBO

Another twerp who you just knew wasn't going to make it out of this thing alive, but death by melted metal face? Certainly original.

  18. Khal Drogo
    HBO

The biggest shock about Drogo's death was that he died in his sleep. A fairly dull affair for one of the greatest warriors in the "Game."

  19. Rickard Karstark
    HBO

    He who passes the sentence…

  20. Janos Slynt
    HBO

    …swings the sword.

  21. Lommy Greenhands
    HBO

"Something wrong with your leg, boy?"

  22. Polliver
    HBO

    "I'll have to carry you."

  23. The Butcher's Boy
    HBO

    "He ran. Not very fast."

  24. Sandor Clegane
    HBO

Just a hunch, but pretty sure that not ALL dogs go to heaven.

  25. Syrio Forel
    HBO

    Yes, today. :(

  26. Grenn
    HBO

    But… Grenn doesn't die in the books…

  27. Pyp
    HBO

    Wait, Pyp doesn't, either…

  28. Jojen Reed
    HBO

Hey, "Game of Thrones," what are you doing?

  29. Barristan the Bold
    HBO

    "Game of Thrones," stahp!

  30. Ros
    HBO

After being one of the most prominent show-only characters for so many episodes, Ros gets an off-screen death? Not that she's the most beloved figure in the series, but it's a huge surprise that the show wrote her off so casually.

  31. King Joffrey Baratheon
    HBO

    Sometimes, we get nice things.

  32. Talisa Stark
    HBO

    More often than not, though…

  33. Robb Stark
    HBO

    …we get horrible things.

  34. Catelyn Stark
    HBO

    Horrible, unspeakable things.

  35. Grey Wind
    HBO

    Not the dog, too!

  36. The Red Viper
    HBO

Maybe not as emotionally shocking as the Red Wedding, but definitely much, much, MUCH grosser. Grossest thing in the show's history, full stop, no arguments.

  37. Ned Stark
    HBO

The first game-changing shock cannot be topped.
