Oklahoma Passes Bill Allowing Guns On School Property

The debate over guns in schools rages on.

On Wednesday (May 6), the Oklahoma state Senate approved a bill that would allow guns on school property. However, not just anyone can carry a gun; the bill would allow the school board to choose one employee to be trained as an armed security guard.

That means, in addition to armed school resource officers, one teacher and/or school staff member would be allowed to carry a gun at all times. Training would be paid for by the school district.

The bill was overwhelmingly approved in the Republican- dominated legislature and has now been sent to Governor Mary Fallin. While the bill's supporters feel it promotes school safety, opponents believe that the bill might be putting more students and teachers in danger.

Obviously, gun violence is a serious issue in America, and the debate on how to solve this problem is a constant source of tension. According to the Brady Center, every single day in the United States 7 children and teens die from gun violence.

What do you think? Is adding more guns in schools necessary, or will it do more harm than good?
