It Took 11 Hours To Apply Cara Delevingne's Custom Met Gala Tattoos

Tattoo artist Bang Bang drops all the deets.

You might think an elaborate ensemble is the only way to make a memorable Met Gala arrival, but Cara Delevingne decided to go a more non-traditional route: by covering herself in hand-painted tattoos.

She worked with tattoo artist Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy (he's tatted up Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and of course, Cara herself) to create one-of-a-kind body art inspired by the night's theme—"China: Through The Looking Glass"—to pair with her cut-out Stella McCartney jumpsuit. He told us it was entirely her idea, which she pitched to him last Wednesday. "The deadline was tight, but my motto is to always say yes!"

They stuck with a birds and blossoms theme for the tattoos that covered her arms, chest, back and neck. "I wanted it to be symbolic for this year's theme, but also keep it simple," he said. "I created stencils that were applied to Cara's body until they were about 95% dry for guidelines, then filled the rest in free hand."

This custom artwork didn't come easy, though–Cara arrived at 8 AM and didn't leave until about 7 PM, which is 11 full hours of painting. Whew! Well, we gotta give it up to Cara for always inspiring us to amp up our beauty game. Oh, and those temporary tats? They'll stay on for about 10 days. Bang Bang reveals, "She should still have it unless she vigorously scrubbed it off!"
