Did you feel a little pang of jealousy when you saw that Drake, Katy Perry, AND Pharrell had already copped the Apple Watch well before the general public? Did your heart ache a little thinking about all the newfound joy they'll get from watching that Mickey Mouse display tap his foot over and over? Or all the extra days of space-age health data they're going to gather? Well, allow me to blow the lid on the whole thing for you: Beyonce also has the Apple Watch now. And it's a style YOU CAN'T EVEN BUY.
Yep! Like Drizzy and Katy, Bey also debuted her new multi-functional arm party at Coachella. And like them, she's repping the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition case. But that's where the similarities end because King Bey has a gold link bracelet and that ish is not available to buy off the rack.
Bey, however, is actually not the first to lay hands on an all-gold-everything Apple Watch. Just days earlier Karl Lagerfeld—fashion behemoth, living legend, and owner of the world's most spoiled cat—flashed his very own gold-on-gold Apple Watch for Instagram.
The snap of Karl's (perforated leather glove-wearing) wrist gives a closer look at the elusive custom watch. Essentially, it's a material update the Stainless Steel Case with Link Bracelet version that *is* available. This one is just, you know, high quality gold.
What's interesting about this custom redesign (for two of the most influential people in the business of fashion and culture, no less) is that it renders the über-futuristic, über-luxurious Apple Watch Edition into a riff on the gold digital watches that were so popular in the '80s and are recently getting a contemporary revival.
IMHO, this is hands down the best case + band Apple Watch pairing I've seen yet, so here's hoping this opens the door to talk a little more realistically about bands beyond Apple's initial offering.
