No need to aca-scuse yourself -- you heard it right. MTV News got the chance to screen "Pitch Perfect 2" during a CinemaCon event in Las Vegas with director Elizabeth Banks last night (April 20), and safe to say our minds were once again blown by the vocal talents of Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, newcomer Hailee Steinfeld and the rest of the Barden Bellas, as they faced their biggest (and most German) challenge yet.
Here are six things you need to know about the movie -- AKA, all of the aca-awesome things we could tell you about the film without an aca-sniper (Aubrey?) mysteriously taking us out and dumping us in the Vegas desert.
They're building up a legacy.Universal Pictures
The first movie was all about getting the ailing Bellas back in business, but "PP2" begins with the Bellas already on top of the universe -- albeit briefly. So who better to help than a brand new, wide-eyed "legacy Bella" with all of the talent of Beca, but literally zero of her sass? Steinfeld's Emily is a little less brazen and ballsy than the rest of the girls, but her beautiful voice and natural comedic talent make her a great addition to the cast.
The celeb cameos are insane.Universal Pictures
There are so many A-list stars who aca-freaks, it will probably blow your mind. Be sure to keep your eye open during the final numbers...
Love is in the air.Universal Pictures
We're not just talking about Beca and Jesse this time around, folks. There are other, very surprising aca-hookups the second time around, and one of them even leads to one of the film's finest and most elaborate musical showcases. You'll know it when you see it.
The battle scenes are bigger and better.Universal Pictures
One of the finest moments in the first "Pitch Perfect" featured all of Barden's best and brightest aca-groups going head-to-head in the middle of the night, and lucky for us they one-up the action on the aca-battles big time. A party thrown by an "acapella aficionado" takes things beyond college to the finest groups in the world -- and trust us, one of them will make your jaw drop -- with even better mash-ups and themes (songs about butts!) than last time.
The competition is fierce.Universal Pictures
Okay, don't hate us here, but even though we're supposed to root for the Bellas, the villains Das Sound Machine are just so sexy, talented and cool that it's impossible not to internally freak out whenever they have a number. They're also verbally abusive to Beca, but we can deal with that since Beca seems to be kind of turned on by the whole thing.
... But it's really all about the Bellas.Universal Pictures
All in all, despite Beca's new internship and the many budding romances and the feud with DSM, "PP2" is a movie about the celebration of sisterhood. The ladies help each other face the anxieties they have about facing the real world after graduation, and the addition of the Legacy Bellas subplot proves how life-changingly special joining an all-female acapella group can be for its members.
