Cinderella Is The Belle Of The Weekend Box Office Ball

If the shoe fits...

Fairy tales never go out of style, as evidenced by the release of "Cinderella" and its massive box office success this weekend. The live-action take on Disney's classic tale pulled in $23 million on Friday, and Variety reports it's on track to make $70 million this weekend.

For reference, the movie is outpacing "Maleficent," last year's smash hit for Disney – the Angelina Jolie-led "Sleeping Beauty" reimagining made $69.4 million in its opening weekend. It's an even bigger deal considering the fact that "Cinderella" isn't led by a major star (though we're pretty sure Lily James will be Hollywood royalty in a few years).

Variety also suggests the film's popularity stems from the fact that it's preceded by "Frozen" tie-in short film "Frozen Fever." Not a bad one-two punch if you ask us, though we're going to chalk all the "Cinderella" success up to its Prince Charming, the super-hot Richard Madden, who'll always be Robb Stark in our hearts.
