You already knew that someone who's puking up beer isn't super attractive, but scientists have figured out exactly how many drinks it takes before you start looking less than fabulous. A study published last February in "Alcohol and Alcoholism" reveals the magic number: 1.
Yep, one. You look the hottest after one round, then it's basically all downhill from there.
In the study, researchers took pics of University of Bristol students when sober, after one glass of wine and after two glasses of wine. Then a different group of sober students compared the pre- and post-drink photos and rated them based on attractiveness.
They rated the one-drink pics as more attractive than the sober pics, but the two-drink pics were rated as less attractive than the one-drink ones.
How is it that one drink gives you a sexy glow while the second round kills the allure?
The study's researchers have several speculations. A little bit of alcohol can increase your pupil dilation and muscle relaxation, both of which are perceived as positive features. Pinker cheeks might also be behind the increased attractiveness.
"The people who had consumed a small amount of alcohol had a slightly rosier complexion [as compared to the sober and two-drink photos]," study author Marcus Munafò told Live Science. "Rosiness is attractive because it characterizes good physical health characteristics."
Which, he clarified, "obviously doesn’t mean that alcohol is healthy." It's just "hijacking that mechanism, or promoting the aspects of facial features that we regard as attractive for other reasons." And if students "go on to consume more alcohol, they're no longer rated as more attractive," Munafò says.
So the next time you're at the bar (assuming you're 21+), know when to call it a night ... especially if you don't want it to be a lonely night.
