'Batman Eternal #48' Post-Game: The Penguin Also Rises

Writer Kyle Higgins breaks down all the big events in "Batman Eternal #48."

Each week, MTV News is breaking down the big moments in DC Comics' "Batman Eternal," the weekly series that is redefining Gotham City as we know it.

This week, the Penguin rises, the Bat-family falls, and the mystery starts to unravel:

MTV News: Jason Bard definitely seems to have turned to the side of the angels, but is it too late? And is he maybe playing a longer game, or can we trust him now?

DC Comics

Kyle Higgins: Jason’s been on quite the journey. At this point, I think it’s safe to say he’s realizing the error of his ways and just how in over his head he’s gotten. But, like you said, is it too late for redemption? It very well might be.

MTV: Each of the bat-family is left in a bad situation, none worse than Red Hood. Given there’s a “krak” sound effect, and Bane’s propensity for breaking backs, how worried should we be right now?

DC Comics

Higgins: Jason’s definitely got his work cut out for him…

MTV: Julia figures something out about coordinating the Bat-family. How key is she to turning the tide?

Higgins: Very key. She’s going to be working to wrestle control of the system back from Hush… With luck, it’ll be before the villains kill the the Bat family!

MTV: This is a bigger question, but between Julia, Spoiler, and Harper there’s been a concerted effort to flesh out the Bat-bench with a few more women. Was that something in particular you guys decided to do heading into this book?

Higgins: We’re looking to write and develop interesting characters, plain and simple. I don’t think anyone went into the series with the mindset or mandate of “we need more female Bat characters,” but I am super happy that’s how it turned out. I’ve always been a big Stephanie Brown fan, so getting to bring her into the New 52 has been super cool. And Harper and Julia both have pretty unique qualities and personalities. I think they’re both great additions to Team Batman.

MTV: Signalman seems key to everything going on, at least according to Spoiler. Why is he important? Is it not just him we should be looking at?

Higgins: Apologies, but I’m going to hide behind “keep reading!”

MTV: Gordon is also in a pretty bad spot at the end, but does Penguin really have it out for him?

DC Comics

Higgins: I think Penguin is willing to do a lot of things in order to get his power back, and if one of those things includes offing Gotham’s Super Cop… well, Jimbo better watch out. Of course, it’s probably ill-conceived to think Gordon’s going to go down without a fight. Hmm… this next issue sounds more and more interesting, doesn’t it?
