The music on the 15-track project is poignant, focused and introspective, but the idea that he’s come far from humble beginnings in his native Detroit hasn’t escaped him.
During the hometown leg of his world wind promo tour, which began at 3:30 am this morning in Atlanta via private jet, the “IDFWU” MC stopped by the very Best Buy where he used to buy CDs; of course, this was before that fateful day he rapped on cue for Kanye West to purchase his album.
MTV News’ Rob Markman, who rode shotgun 30,000 feet in the air with Sean Don from ATL to the D, was there and described it as a “real moment for him” before posting a picture of the rapper in action on Instagram.
“Detroit we outchea buying all the CDs. @bigsean #DarkSkyParadise,” he wrote.
“Sean had a bunch of radio things lined up with really no time for anything in between,” Markman said later while Big Sean was signing autographs at Detroit’s The Shelter at Saint Andrews Hall. “But we were passing this Best Buy in Southfield that he always used to hang out and buy CDs there. So Sean said, ‘Listen man, I know we don’t have a lot of time but I wanna stop. I wanna be able to buy my own CD at this Best Buy.’ So we pulled over and he went in there and bought the whole rack. No security, no nothing. It was just a real moment for him. He had to go and buy his own CD from the place he grew up at.”
Not surprisingly, many of the store's employees recognized Sean, a longtime customer, and requested photos and autographs.
The best moment, though, came when Sean was in line to buy his latest opus.
“The store was kind of empty and it was a dude on line and Sean just gave him a CD,” said Markman. “And he was like, ‘I got two kids.’ So Sean bought two CDs for this guy, opened them up and signed them. The guy said he was going to send them to his kids in college.”
