Cody Simpson Goes Raw And Beachy On New Song 'Driftwood': Listen

The track is available as a free download for the next 24 hours btw.

Just a week after debuting breezy track “Flower,” Cody Simpson has released a live version of another brand-new song.

“Driftwood” shows off the Australian singer’s guitar chops and Jack Johnson-esque voice as he croons: “Gotta free my soul from the troubles of lately/ Follow my heart wherever it takes me/ Let it float on by like a piece of driftwood.” The track also has a splash of reggae flair and a killer tempo change a couple minutes in that speeds things up.

In an Instagram post, Cody revealed that he recorded the raw version of the song on a cliff overlooking Malibu, Calif., which is totally appropriate given the song’s chill, beachy vibes.

Cody also treated his fans to a couple clips of him singing the song live, showing off his “big brown hat and bare feet.”

Cody recently told MTV News that his forthcoming album will be his freshest and most personal release to date.

“For a lot of people it’s the first they are ever going to hear from me and that’s what’s relieving to me,” he said. “I have a fresh start and now having turned 18 and this symbolic age of independence and a new phase of my life it feels like the very first album I’ve ever done, and it feels like the first song I’ve ever released. It feels very new, very fresh and I feel very enthusiastic.”

The live version of “Driftwood” is available as a free download on SoundCloud for 24 hours, so hurry up and get it while it’s hot/free.
