“Fifty Shades of Grey” ruled the box office this weekend, earning the top spot and breaking a record while heating theaters up.
It was Valentine’s Day weekend though, so are you really surprised?
The sexy drama earned the top spot at the box office with a whopping $81.7 million, according to EW. That was such a strong showing that it earned about $45 million more than the second place film, “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”
Fans of the Anastasia and Christian love affair -- or contractual arrangement -- helped “Fifty” have the best Valentine’s Day debut of all time. That makes sense, right? Couples went to enjoy the romance, fans of the book went to see the erotic pages come to life, and some people even went to watch it solo.
“Fifty’s” success this weekend also helped it become the second-best February debut ever. Why second-best? Well, “Grey" trailed “The Passion Of The Christ.” Can those two films be any more different?
In case you were wondering, “SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water,” “American Sniper” and “Jupiter Ascending” rounded out the weekend’s top five in that order.
These figures are just a look at the Friday-Sunday numbers, so imagine how the President’s Day ticket sales will impact these figures... and for the record, we've still got some serious "Fifty" questions that need answering.
