For many "Fifty Shades of Grey" fangirls, the appeal of E.L. James' kinky thriller comes from the broody businessman at the center of the angsty action, Christian Grey. He's described as darkly erotic, handsome, and extremely cold. Grey is a sexual predator, but one that -- for some reason -- woefully innocent Anastasia Steele thinks she can tame.
But when "Fifty Shades of Grey" hits theaters this weekend, prepare to meet a very different Anastasia. Dakota Johnson, Ana's portrayer in the big screen adaptation, somehow manages to turn one of the most bland characters in literary history into a enamoring force. Because in director Sam Taylor-Johnson's version of these naughty events, Ana is funny, layered, and most importantly, a complete character, thanks to Johnson's charm and effortless timing. (Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Jamie Dornan's lackluster performance as Grey.)
In other words, prepare to fall in love with the 25-year-old actress, who is undoubtedly the breakout star of "Fifty Shades." Here are seven reasons you'll totally be crushing on Johnson by the time the credits roll:
Oh crap! She's actually funny.
Ana may not have a sense of humor in the books, but Johnson rectifies that with her own nuanced brand of humor. Her comedic timing is effortless, and she's especially gifted at dropping adorable F-bombs.
Perhaps Johnson's greatest feat is her emotional transparency. We may always know what Ana is feeling, but that doesn't mean we know how she's going to react to those feelings. Movie Ana has more agency, and we have Johnson to thank for that.
She's one hell of a negotiator.
Hands down, the best scene in the film is the pre-coital negotiations, which Johnson completely owns. Dare we say she dominates Dornan?
Her laugh is pretty great.
How else is she supposed to react to being flogged in the Red Room of Pain? Way to make things less awkward, DJ.
She's the best drunk dialer in the history of cinema.
If Johnson's hilarious drunk dialing scene doesn't win you over, you have no soul.
She YOLO's on the dance floor.
Johnson is kind of like the Taylor Swift of "Fifty Shades"; she dances like no one's watching and gives zero effs.
She can make anything sound sexy.
Our girl has got major skills.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" hits theaters on February 13.
