1997 will depart from my life not a millisecond too soon. I must know of or
have been touched in some significant way by twenty deaths this year, from
blues and jazz singer LaVern Baker to author Michael Dorris, who wrote the
best-selling book The Broken Cord. The November 21 New York Times, in fact,
carried obituaries of two artists of some importance in my eyes and ears.
