"I didn't know that this album would entail an emotional roller coaster," Nicki Minaj says to open the trailer for the upcoming MTV special, "Nicki Minaj: My Time AGAIN." And the trailer itself is a bit of an emotional roller coaster, too.
We see the rap star smiling, laughing, dancing, rapping -- and even crying.
But why are you crying, Nicki?
While we won't find out for sure until the doc airs, this Sunday at 10 p.m. on MTV, we have some theories.
Dealing With Heartbreak
Nicki's split from longtime boyfriend Safaree "SB" Samuels hasn't been a secret -- between her reflecting on it in interviews and addressing it in music. The wounds still seem fresh now, so they must have been even fresher when this was shot.
Overcome With Joy
"The album is finally done!"
The trailer gives us a bunch of shots of Nicki during her memorable 2014 VMAs and the lead up to the show -- but maybe the pressure, for a moment at least, proved to be too much. She opened the show with performances of "Bang Bang" and "Anaconda," plus one of her dancers got bit by a snake during rehearsals. That probably woulda made me cry.
She Had Just Written One Of The Many Emotional Songs On The Pinkprint
The Young Money rapper's third album is her most personal to date, as she addresses relationships and hardships with a candor we had rarely heard before. Writing those songs must have been emotionally draining.
Or Was Actually Playing "The Crying Game"
One of those emotional songs is "The Crying Game," and it sure looks like Nicki was playing -- and winning.
Someone Cut An Onion
Hey, who knows? A woman's gotta eat.
Something Got Caught In Her Eye
And the tears were merely a defense mechanism. Right?
