Between Kim Kardashian's butt breaking the internet, Kermit sippin' on some truth tea, and those never-ending Ice Bucket Challenges, there certainly wasn't a shortage of memorable memes in 2014. But instead of rounding up the most unforgettable pop culture moments of the year in the typical way, we decided to let nail art do all the talking. Because, hey, the only thing better than the actual event is seeing it translated into a killer mani, right? Right. Let's get to it!
PHARRELL'S GIANT GRAMMYS HAT
The year kicked off with one of the biggest fashion moments, well, ever. At the 2014 Grammys, Pharrell showed up in a Smokey The Bear-inspired hat, which led to too many memes (and Halloween costumes!) to count. I mean, the hat's so famous, Pharrell's face didn't even make an appearance in this set of nails.
"THE LEGO MOVIE"
When The Lego Movie was released in February, adults and bbs alike couldn't get enough of the hilarious and heartwarming flick. (Also, we got to see our favorite toys come to life!). So, of course we had to find some equally-awesome nail art to match.
LUPITA NYONG'O AT THE OSCARS
Not only did Lupita Nyong'o win an Oscar this year, but she looked dang good while doing it. Her plunging Prada dress was "a blue that reminds [her] of Nairobi," which made this whole outfit infinitely more awesome (and the nails inspired by it too!)
IGGY AZALEA'S "FANCY" MUSIC VIDEO
To put it lightly, this was Iggy Azalea’s year. One of our favorite moments, though, was definitely her almost exact replica of the '90s cult movie Clueless for her "Fancy" music video. Obvi we needed some plaid yellow nails to match.
KIM AND KANYE'S WEDDING
Kimye tied the knot in May this year officially making them the #WORLDSMOSTTALKEDABOUTCOUPLE, but did y'all know that the photo Kim posted of her and ’Ye kissing on the big day is the most liked Instagram photo OF ALL TIME? Yeah. So, we know these nail decals aren't exactly about them exchanging nuptials, but we had to find some way to celebrate The Year of Kimye™.
"THE FAULT IN OUR STARS"
TRUTH TEA KERMIT MEME
It's hard to place when exactly Kermit smugly sippin' on Lipton tea became a meme, but it seems like it hit peak awareness mid-summer. Personally, we'd pair this killer mani with our DIY Kermit hoodie, but that's none of our business.
NICKI MINAJ'S 'ANACONDA' COVER ART
When Nicki Minaj dropped the image of her "Anaconda" single cover art on Instagram wearing nothing but a thong, the internet exploded. So much, in fact, that people started creating T-shirts, bedspreads, clocks, and even shower curtains within 24 hours of it being posted. And, yes, of course there's nail decals too.
THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
This summer was plagued with one of the biggest charity-driven memes of (perhaps!) all time–the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Celebrities (like, even Anna Wintour, y'all) took to Instagram and Facebook to share videos of themselves getting doused in cold water and, of course, there had to be nail art to go along with it.
BEYONCE'S VMA PERFORMANCE
Wowowow, where do we even start with Beyonce’s empowering 2014 VMA performance? She took us through a medley of all her latest hits, but when she sang "Flawless" with the word "Feminist" behind her in big, bold letters, history was officially made. These nail decals celebrate all things Bey.
EMMA WATSON'S HEFORSHE CAMPAIGN
Speaking of feminism, Emma Watson's eloquent UN speech on gender equality inspired tons of celebrities to support her HeForShe campaign, which seeks to involve men in the fight for women’s rights. Lucky for us, there's some badass nail art to match.
TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER CATS
Yeah, yeah, we know Taylor Swift released a huge album this fall, but honestly, we consider 2014 the year Tay Tay took her crazy cat lady status to the next level. Not only did she design Keds with her kitty on it, but she was also spotted sporting Olivia Benson (her new cat!)... as an accessory. YUP. We love how this mani shows off Taylor's two fuzzy friends in the best way possible.
KIM KARDASHIAN'S #BREAKTHEINTERNET MAG COVER
There's no question that this is the year of the butt, so when Kim Kardashian revealed her totally bare bottom on the cover of Paper magazine, there's no question that she broke the internet (as the cover line so aptly suggested). Luckily, someone created nekkid Kim nails for all to enjoy.
THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY, PART 1
Yes, we know Frozen was released in November of 2013, but dang, y'all, the hype refuses to quit. In fact, we're pretty sure it's ramping up even more now that the cold weather is here. With a wedding dress replica, a makeup line and even a collaboration with Comme des Garcons, I guess the nail art thing was bound to happen.
BUTTS... IN GENERAL
F'real though, 2014 was filled with some of the most bootylicious moments of all time. Between Nicki's "Anaconda" butt bounce, Beyonce's "7/11” glute flexing, Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea's very hot (and very appropriately-named) "Booty" video, and Kim K's cheeky Paper magazine cover, we can officially say this year was all about dat bass.
