EXCLUSIVE: 'Hold Me Closer: The Tiny Cooper Story' Is Super-Sparkly

It's Tiny's turn to shine in a new book by David Levithan.

If you couldn't get enough of big gay hero Tiny Cooper in "Will Grayson, Will Grayson," then gird your loins and warm up your vocal chords: He's back, in an amazing musical companion novel! "Hold Me Closer: The Tiny Cooper Story" is David Levithan's own enthusiastic followup to the book he co-wrote with John Green, in which Tiny gets his long-awaited and much-deserved turn in the spotlight. And while it won't be on shelves until March 2015, we've got an exclusive first peek at its beautiful cover, which is decorated with some very holiday season-appropriate sparkle.

MTV News got in touch with Levithan to get some scoop about the "Tiny Cooper" cover, and the story behind it.

"I don’t think this is something that John [Green] or I would have ever dreamed of happening when we started writing WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON – but from the moment he appeared in John’s first chapter, Tiny pretty much stole the book," the author told us via email. "So attention must be paid! Truly, it’s been incredible to see readers’ reactions to Tiny over the years – so it seemed the right time to put him in the spotlight. Now I just hope musically-inclined people will post some tunes to go along with my lyrics. I am a huge musical fan . . . but have proven completely unable to carry a tune."

Speaking of which: Yes, this book really is a full-on musical, complete with stage direction and lots of big, jazz-handy song-and-dance numbers. The only thing missing, as Levithan mentioned, is actual music. But that's where he's hoping that fans of the novel will step up and step into the spotlight.

"I trust that there are many, many Tiny Coopers out there. And if they’re truly like Tiny Cooper, I am sure they will use YouTube to find their way to me," he said.

As for the cover of this musical extravaganza (which has a cool trompe-l'oeil effect that makes it look even more like a script), Levithan explained that it's "loud, fun, and shiny. That’s very much in tune with the story. It’s very gold – but I don’t think Tiny Cooper thinks there’s such a thing as too much glitter."
