Maisie Williams Is Absolutely Down For 'The Last Of Us'

This is excellent, because of reasons.

Although the long-awaited movie adaptation of "The Last of Us" is still missing certain key elements -- like, y'know, a script, a director, or a production schedule -- at least there's no question anymore about who would be its leading lady. That would be "Game of Thrones" actress Maisie Williams, who recently confirmed that she's the filmmakers' number one choice to play Ellie.

In a chat with IGN, Williams said that she became aware of the role when she saw people suggesting her for it on Twitter, and was immediately intrigued.

"And when I got my American agent and he said, ‘If there’s anything you want to do, let us know’ — America’s got such that can-do attitude -- that was the first time I came to him with anything," she said. "So he said he’d set us up for a meeting next time I’m in America. And they did. So I had a meeting with [producer] Sam Raimi and [game director] Neil Druckmann."

The upshot of that meeting? No surprises here: They want Maisie, and Maisie wants the part -- and from the sound of it, it's hers, just so long as they make the movie soon enough for her to still believably play a teenager. And while we can't get too excited yet ("The Last of Us" doesn't even have a script yet, remember), we can be thrilled about Maisie waiting in the wings to take its lead. Why?

She knows what it's like to play a fan favorite

After four years of playing Arya Stark on "Game of Thrones," Maisie understands the responsibilities of bringing a beloved character to life. Of all the actresses who might have played Ellie, she can definitely be counted on to take it seriously and do her homework.

She can handle the challenge

The role of Ellie requires serious grit, masking a deep, dark well full of damage -- which is complicated, but something we've seen Maisie do before. Look at her scary, empty expression as she drives a sword into this guy's neck! SUCH ACTING.

She basically doesn't age

In a world where all kinds of things can delay production, it's not a bad bet to snag a lead actress who will probably still look like a teenager even when she's 50 years old.

We're officially just one casting choice away from an Arya/Hound reunion

Yes, okay, it's unlikely that Rory McCann would be cast in "The Last of Us" as Joel; the filmmakers will probably be looking for a more recognizable, bankable actor to fill that role. But considering how great he and Maisie were together during their run on "Game of Thrones," the possibility of seeing them team up again is too good not to hope for. So we're hoping, and you can't stop us.
