From the perspective of everyone involved in filmmaking, it really sucks to have a movie of yours leak onto the internet.
More specifically, "It really f--king sucked."
The news of the leak and wide-spread pirating of "Expendables 3" reached the cast during what should have been a high point of their press tour, San Diego Comic-Con.
"We were on this high, thinking 'I'm excited for this movie. We have this all-star cast, a really great story, fun action. It's PG-13.' You roll the dice seven after seven after seven with all of those components in this film, and you're really excited," Lutz said. "At the end of the day, one little thing can just ruin the box office opening for your film."
From the way Lutz looks at the actual returns on the movie, "Expendables 3" only did a third of the business that it should have and may have prematurely ended the series, which he blames directly on piracy. "If people don't see it in the theaters, there's a slim chance that you'll get a fourth movie out of it," Lutz said. "I think it really hurt."
The unhappy ending of the release, however, can't take away from the good time that Lutz had making the movie, which he compared to living in an amusement park for a month.
"You don't get tired of it," Lutz said. "You're just really enjoying everything, and then you slowly go back to your normal life and it's not as fun. I honestly wish that movie lasted longer. I wish we could do a fourth one. I wish I could hang out with all of those guys. It really felt like frat years that I never had."
"Expendables 3" hits Blu-ray and DVD on November 25.
