Here's How Zayn Malik Responded To Matt Lauer's Substance Abuse Question

Yikes! Zayn's not feeling well, and he's also not feeling the 'Today' show host's line of questioning.

One Direction's Zayn Malik is not only sick, but he's also a bit angry.

Zayn didn't show up to the band's appearance on the "Today" show on Monday, Nov. 17, which just so happened to be the release day of their album FOUR, and he was a bit taken back when Matt Lauer asked his bandmates whether he was dealing with a substance abuse problem and not a "minor illness."

"I'm really angry and upset by what was said on the 'Today; show. I was really ill at the weekend, that's why I couldn't fly to America," Zayn told U.K.'s The Sun (via Us Weekly) "I was gutted to have to miss album release day, but I’m going to be back as soon as I can. As soon as I'm feeling better I'm going to join the guys and carry on with the promotion for the album."

A representative for One Direction also echoed Zayn's same sentiments telling the Daily Mail that he got sick after recording the Band Aid single for charity.

When Matt asked the guys "Where is Zayn?" during the show, Liam was quick to answer saying, “He’s got a tummy bug so he’s not very well,” Liam Payne said. “We only found out this morning so we’re really sad, he is as well, that he can’t be here for our album release… It’s still going to be a great day, I’m sure.”

The veteran TV host then pushed the issue, adding, "There's obviously a lot of concern, a lot of fans have been tweeting overnight. There's been a lot of action on social media about him. Is it something more serious than just a minor illness? There have been rumors of substance abuse. What's going on?"

With the rest of the guys looking a bit taken back by the question, Liam responded saying that he "just got a stomach bug," and assured the fans, who were clearly booing at the question, that "he's okay."

And some 1D fans also came to Zayn's defense after Lauer's drug question:

But if the question bothered 1D, it seems like they got over it with Liam tweeting that it was his "favourite day ever of being in this band."

Meanwhile Harry Styles took to Instagram thanking the "Today" show adding, "You're always very nice."
