Falcon Officially Takes Over As The 'All-New Captain America'

Cap'n Sam!

The new Captain America has arrived, and he’s ready for duty!

Sam Wilson, better known as the Falcon, officially dons Steve Rogers’ star-spangled uniform in the first issue of Marvel’s “All-New Captain America,” which hit stores and newsstands Wednesday (November 12).

While Wilson won’t be quite the super soldier that Rogers was, he’ll still be a total badass—able to swoop down with his Falcon wings and hurl his indestructible shield at fiendish villains that threaten the American way.

With the new African-American “Cap” representing the stars and stripes, Marvel’s new diversity campaign is in full swing.

Writer Rick Remender will explore Wilson's troubled upbringing as a young boy in Harlem, and will speak to a new generation in ways that the stoic, Depression-era Rogers probably could not. Case in point: one of the variant covers features Mississippi’s Rae Sremmurd and a nod to their undeniable hit, "No Flex Zone."

“As I was developing the series, I fell more in love with Sam Wilson as a character and realized that in Marvel continuity time, he would be a Generation X-er, as am I,” Remender told CNN. “He’d have a more modern sensibility and be able to speak to an audience the way Steve Rogers wouldn’t be able to, so we started building the story from there.”

Additionally, Wilson won’t attack things from the standpoint of a soldier, like Rogers.

“He wants to stand up and put himself between the forces of evil and corruption and things that would harm the everyday citizen,” Remender added. “Sam will not be working as closely with S.H.I.E.L.D. as Steve. Ultimately, the way they approach problems will be quite different.
