Surprise: George Lucas Wrote A Secret Animated Musical

And it has nothing to do with 'Star Wars.'

We haven't heard much from George Lucas since he sold off the "Star Wars" empire in 2012, but a piece of news from today gives us some idea of what he's been up to.

"Strange Magic" is an animated musical that's hitting theaters on January 23, and it has a story written by Lucas.

The movie, which is described as a "madcap fairy tale musical inspired by 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,'" will feature popular music from the past 60 years and stars Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, and Maya Rudolph.

This is an interesting first step from post-"Star Wars" Lucas, and I'm excited to see more. Regardless of how you feel about the prequels, the man created one of the most enduring pieces of pop culture in American history, and that's more than enough to check out whatever he does next.

"Strange Magic" opens in theaters on January 23.
