According to Deadline, Benedict Cumberbatch is in final negotiations to play Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, in Marvel Studios' 2016 film "Doctor Strange," to be directed by Scott Derrickson.

Cumberbatch had been an early fan favorite for the role and was rumored to be on Marvel's preliminary wish list along with Tom Hardy.

At San Diego Comic-Con, just before news broke that Joaquin Phoenix had the role locked down, Cumberbatch explained to MTV that scheduling would keep him from the part.

When Phoenix dropped out, Marvel was said to be starting from scratch, and it appears Marvel and the entirety of the internet have gotten their wish.

"Doctor Strange" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
