Rapper Coolio is under investigation after allegedly getting into a scuffle with a store owner in the Southwestern German town of Boeblingen on Thursday, police told Reuters.
The rapper and his eight-member entourage allegedly left the boutique wearing clothing they had not paid for, with one of the eight allegedly punching the merchant on the way out, according to the report.
German police are investigating the incident, which occurred while the 34-year-old rapper was in the midst of a two-month European promotional tour to hype his recently-released album My Soul, which contains the radio hit "C U When U Get There."
Coolio (a.k.a. Artis Ivey) reportedly turned himself in at a Frankfurt police station on Thursday evening, paid bail and was allowed to remain free while police investigated the claims.
Malik Bellamy of the rapper's label, Tommy Boy Records, had no official comment on the incident, since, he said, Tommy Boy had not yet received any details from their European partners. "But it doesn't sound like him," said Bellamy, of the rapper who has built a reputation on both his signature spiky braids and bouncy pop rap such as his breakthrough single "Fantastic Voyage" and "Too Hot." "It just doesn't sound like his thing."
The rapper, who has been touring Europe since the beginning of October, will continue his travels this week by hitting Zurich on Friday, and Rotterdam on Sunday. -- Gil Kaufman [Fri., Nov. 21, 1997, 6 p.m. PDT]
