Good news: Jay Electronica has enough material to fill multiple albums. Bad news: he's still not comfortable enough to whittle that down into one project for release.
Jay Elect fans have been pining for an album for years now, and back in July the "Exhibit C" rapper revealed that drug use has contributed to the delay. When he walked the carpet at the 2014 Bet Hip Hop Awards pre-tape in Atlanta on Saturday, he cleared up a few things for MTV News, explaining that even though it was only "recreational drug use," he's still had a hard time kicking the habit.
"When I came into Islam in my early adult life, I stopped smoking weed and drinking, and over the past few years I just picked those activities back up," he explained. "[So it's] not that I had fallen into hardcore Skid Row drug abuse [but it was] just taking a toll on my body and lifestyle."
"I'm still fighting to stay clean," he added, "It's always a fight to do the right thing and I'm always making music so that didn't necessarily have an effect on my music, I just work when I feel like it. I don't like to force music."
Through all of this, Jay Z has continued to support Jay Elect, even appearing by his side during a July performance at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival.
"[Jay's] very involved and we've got a good relationship," Jay Elect told MTV News. "The greatest thing that he's done with me, is that he's been very patient with me -- just letting me do me, and take my time. He's got the music, but I've still gotta get to a point where I'm comfortable with it, because at the end of the day it's me coming."
"I've got enough material for many albums."
