By Katherine McNamara
Hey there—Katherine McNamara here! I’ll be starring as Harper Munroe in MTV’s new dramedy series Happyland! The show airs September 30 at 11 p.m. after Awkward and Faking It. In the meantime, I had the opportunity to attend some amazing shows at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. I shared some of my photos from the shows on MTV Style's Instagram, but now I'm here to share my full experience using, y'know, words. Find my full NYFW diary below!
My first day of Fashion Week madness happened before I even made it to the Mercedes Benz tents at Lincoln Center. After a morning of interviews with press outlets to promote Happyland, I raced around the city to different showrooms and designers' offices picking up pieces for the next few days. I spent an entire day making sure I had looks that fit, highlighted the designer, and that were different enough so I could have varied styles throughout the week. Once I had that together, I had to get ready for the first event!
The first show I attended was a presentation for Jay Godfrey’s new collection for Spring 2015. Oh my goodness, Jay’s line is everything I love about fashion: edgy and soft, leather and lace, classic silhouettes! I was in fashion week heaven!
I was absolutely in love with the dress Jay gave me to wear to the show. This tweed, high-neck number with its flirty ruffle at the bottom had a feminine flair, while still keeping with Jay’s cutting edgy aesthetic. I wore my hair up in a messy bun so I could leave the gorgeous neckline of the dress exposed. This dress fit like a glove—no alterations needed! It's the tweed version of an LBD—perfect for any occasion dressed up or down.
One thing is for sure: Leggy is in for spring. If your legs are your fave feature, you will love these amazing skirts as much as I do. The best part? There is a skirt for every fashion personality. The sweet romantic blush lace, the elegant charcoal and silver print, and the edgy black lace provide options for every girl who wants to strut her stuff.
Can I please wear this suit every day for the rest of my life? The clean lines of the lapels and the side stripe on the pants are so crisp and classic, while the print takes this look to the wild side. Seriously though, can it be spring now, please? I don’t want to wait!
The following day, I went to the Charlotte Ronson presentation. I just love her aesthetic—everything she does is just so fresh and accompanied by a young, fun vibe. I wore a dress of Charlotte’s from a different collection—I totally fell in love with the floral print. I paired it with some fun chunky booties for a '90s throwback look, because why not?
This was the first event I attended in the Mercedes Benz tents. Oh my goodness, walking into those tents is like entering another world. SO many fashionably dressed people, so many people running around from show to show, it's just hectic, amazing, and fashionable all at the same time!
I am unbelievably obsessed with this dress. This color is just so stunning. It would complement nearly any complexion—plus it looks like the color of the sky on a perfect spring day! The skirt has a fun, flirty shape to it, but when paired with this top half, it adds just the right amount of edge. Oh, and did I mention it's leather? Yup, leather!
I'm in love with this print Charlotte sprinkled throughout her collection. The watercolor effect is so beautiful and is really unexpected against the more graphic prints. It also pulls in the navy and blush colors to tie the collection together seamlessly (pun intended ☺).
The next morning, I woke up super early to get ready for my first official runway show—the Lie Sangbong "Dream Road" show. I was so excited to attend, as I had been given this beautiful vest to wear from the Fall/Winter collection. I had never worn such a dark and different look to an event before and I could not wait to put it all together. Also, the vest had pockets—need I say more?
I got to the show early (there was no traffic for once, go figure!) and had a chance to look around backstage. It was definitely a hive of activity. There were hair and makeup artists going from model to model, dressers darting about, and photographers capturing it all.
Because I was one of the first to arrive at his show, one of the photographers pulled me aside and took some really amazing shots of me on the runway! Too cool. P.S. The runway is made up of over 1,000 glass tiles—all different, all individually laid down the morning of the show. Incredible!
This look left me speechless. The oversized white shirt dress is an amazing piece on its own—the perfect piece of feminine menswear. To add the corset on top is a stroke of brilliance on the part of the designer. The blousy nature of the shirt dress is perfectly balanced by the structure of the corset. The butterfly design adds a sense of whimsy that takes the look to another level of genius.
These models certainly look like they are walking on air in these incredible pieces. The cloud motif was repeated in several looks in Lie’s collection. The textile is complemented by the fluid silhouettes which give the looks a lighter-than-air, dreamy feel. The blues are so vibrant, they would light up any room. These looks are a literal breath of fresh air for spring.
Finally, I rounded out my NYFW with Nanette Lepore's runway show. This one was very near and dear to my heart because I've been working with Nanette and wearing pieces of hers to events and red carpets for over a year now. I simply adore her and her clothing. Her dresses are so classic and stunning but she always seems to add a little bit of edge. Also, her silhouettes are so flattering on women’s figures. She really thinks about what makes women look and feel their best. Such an incredible designer and a beautiful woman inside and out! Here is a pic of us backstage before her show.
To this show, I wore a two-piece knit set from her Holiday 2014 collection. I fell in love with the vibrant teal accents that popped off the black background. Also, the fact that it was a sweater crop top and skirt was just too fun to pass up! It was comfortable and memorable—a winning combination.
This was probably my favorite look in the entire collection. I am in love with this color! This turquoise blue looks like a beautiful ocean off the coast of the tropical island. (After watching this show, I was ready to hop on a plane to the Caribbean and conga line my way down the beach in one of Nanette’s amazing looks.) The pleats at the waist create such a unique texture that still complements the figure. Also, the low open back is stunning.
After the show, we headed over to the rooftop of a beautiful hotel for the after party. It was such a fun evening with Nanette and her family and friends. We celebrated her and danced the night away with an incredible view of the city! Many of us made a wardrobe change before the party to be able to showcase even more of Nanette’s work. I wore a dress that was actually on the runway in last year’s collection—I loved the asymmetrical hem and deep neckline. I also ran into my friend, Peyton List at the party—we had a blast!
The next morning, after maybe two hours of sleep (LOL), I packed up and headed to the airport. Fashion Week was such an amazing experience. So many new trends, amazing designers, stunning looks, and tons of fun memories to last a lifetime. I hope to be at Fashion Week again soon! Here’s a view of Lincoln Center at 5 a.m. from the window of my hotel just before I left. For once, it was quiet, but as always, still beautiful as ever.
I think my tweet sums it up:
Now, time for sleep. Don't forget to watch Happyland on September 30—see ya there!
