How Will 'Captain America 3' Change The Marvel Universe?

Get ready for a game-changer.

There's nothing small about Steve Rogers — at least, not anymore.

Everything the star-spangled superhero does has maximum impact. Where Tony Stark remains fairly isolated in the "Iron Man" films, and the "Thor" franchise largely deals with happenings away from Earth, the "Captain America" franchise features lasting changes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — most recently, the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the events of "The Winter Soldier."

Expect a similar seismic shift in the still untitled "Captain America 3." Speaking with Crave Online, directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that their upcoming sequel contains a "very, very big idea" at its core, similar to the rise of Hydra in "The Winter Soldier." But while the unrevealed twist of the "Captain America" sequel "alters the universe as a whole in some way," as instructed by Marvel's top brass, the Russo brothers insist that the film's villain and story arc is otherwise entirely in their hands.

So, how will the "Winter Soldier" follow-up change the landscape of the Marvel Universe, yet again? Perhaps it has something to do with the film's title. According to the Russos, the next "Captain America" movie's title is already picked out, and they're eager to let the Cap out of the bag.

"We'd like to announce the title soon," said Joe Russo. "If you've been talking to Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] the title has been in place probably for ten years in his brain. It’s all part of the road map that he’s laid out, and it’s all part of the bigger plan."

Let the speculation begin, then. What could the title tell us about the future of Marvel? Could it be "Captain America: Secret Avengers," indicating Rogers' new place as the leader of a new team of heroes? Could it be "Captain America: Fallen Son," teasing Steve's demise? Chris Evans was tight-lipped on both topics when we spoke with him at TIFF, but he did promise this: "Marvel doesn't disappoint."

No matter the title, and no matter the game-changing idea, "Captain America 3" will sling its shield into theaters on May 6, 2016.
