By this point, 2014 is well on its way to being remembered as the year everyone dyed their hair. Kesha mastered ROY G. BIV in dye shades while Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, and Kristen Stewart all switched up their looks. Technicolor hair may as well be the new norm—but that’s exactly why Lena Dunham’s new ’do is all the more major.
Over the weekend, the Girls star gave us some homework when she unveiled an eye-popping platinum blonde hairstyle. Was it a wig or wasn’t it? Thankfully she didn’t keep us on the hook for too long. One Instagram later, we learned that, yes, Dunham has gone the hydrogen peroxide way of Madonna and all of the other great natural brunettes gone blonde.
The occasion? “Change is good,” Lena wrote in the caption of her first Instagram showing her platinum locks. In the second, Lena’s bowl cut was side-swept into a softer bob, and she mentioned that she was at a wedding. What spurred the change? Sia’s trademark ’do, perhaps?
Earlier this year while promoting her new album, 1000 Forms of Fear, Sia took an unconventional promotional route, asking others to be the face of her songs in platinum wigs—to match her hair and album cover—as she hid on the sidelines. One of the people she called on was Lena Dunham, who did an interpretive dance and lip-synced to Sia’s lead single “Chandelier” on Late Night With Seth Meyers. It was unforgettable for many reasons (see: Lena's dancing) and the event obviously stuck with her.
Season four of Girls just finished wrapping, so it may be a while 'til her platinum hair makes it into our Sunday nights. Of course, we'll have the opportunity to see it at the Emmys next Monday (August 25)—we're betting it'll look great with her cupcake-inspired dress.
