The Spider-Man movie series is in a trouble spot. Even with over $200 million in U.S. ticket sales, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is the lowest earning entry in the wall crawler's franchise and the fourth drop in a row for both the series' iterations — and that's with the help of 3-D ticket sales.
Sony has already pushed "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" back to 2018, but what else is the studio planning to turn the series around?
According to a story from Deadline, Sony is planning to give a female character of the Spider-Man universe her own movie in 2017. The site reports that Lisa Joy Nolan has been hired to write a script about a yet-unknown female hero.
Since there's no word yet on which character might be the focus of a female-centric Spider-Man movie, speculation has already begun on the internet with people pointing to characters like Black Cat (who Felicity Jones played in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"), Spider-Woman and Silver Sable.
Among the major studios putting out superhero movies, there's many speculatiNG whether Warner Bros. or Marvel Studios would be the next to produce a female-led tentpole. With obvious candidates like Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel already heavily rumored for standalone movies, few expected Sony to make this movie, especially considering how shallow its roster of Marvel characters actually is.
