3 Songs, 1 Drumstick Drop: Justin Bieber’s First VMA Performance Is The Ultimate #TBT!

Justin Bieber made his mark at the 2010 VMAs going from a pop singer to a pop star.

The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards are where music artists become music stars. It happened to Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, but in 2010, it was Justin Bieber’s turn. The pop star took over L.A. Live for a performance of not one, not two, but three songs (“U Smile,” “Baby” And “Somebody To Love”), making it truly a #TBT standout moment of Justin’s career. Here’s why!

At the time, I was working at the 2010 VMAs as a producer, and it seemed like all anyone could talk about that year was Justin. Now, many weren’t sure what to expect from the Biebs before he took the VMA stage for the very first time, but we all knew it was going to be big. What we got totally exceeded our expectations.

I mean, those dance moves, that wardrobe change, the drumstick drop and recovery?! There were so many memorable moments from that performance, which had him taking a page out of the Beatles’ “Hard Days Night.” There are still some moments you may not have noticed, which is why I’m dishing out fun facts about this epic Justin moment in VMA history.
