Ellie Goulding follows Zayn Malik, Selena Gomez and Rihanna as the latest celebrity to wade into the conflict between Israel and Palestine, immediately dividing twiter (and her fans) with a single retweet.
Ellie found herself in the middle of the controversy after she retweeted the image and message below, originally shared by English rapper Jamie Adenuga, on Wednesday.
While the snap and simple statement, "Reality," is much less direct than the #FreePalestine hashtag that both Malik and Rihanna used (Rihanna later removed hers, clarifying that all she wants is peace) fans were still upset. Goulding quickly stepped in to make her meaning clear, though.
"I had so much respect for you Ellie. If you don't realize who are the murders here that shows a lot. #FreeIsrael," one user tweeted, prompting Goulding to reply, "You lost respect for me because I posted a photo a thing that is happening in the world? That doesn't seem quite right."
"Is it what ur supporting? I think its quite wrong," another user asked, linking to a description of Hamas, the militant Palestinian organization that is currently warring with Israel from the Gaza Strip. The latest battle between Hamas and Israel has resulted in more than 1,000 Palestinian and nearly 60 Israeli deaths, according to The New York Times.
"The only thing I support is peace x," Goulding replied, answering similar assertions by another user with, "I am against war, as I'm sure you are too x"
Other Twitter users rushed to support Goulding, however. "Ellie is the most peaceful human being I know," one fan said, while another opined, "Ellie supports peace & kindness for humans & animals alike. I think you've misunderstood, eG has a huge [heart]."
