Just when you thought Nick Jonas couldn't get any hotter -- yeah, his shirtless selfie from nearly a year ago still serves as the wallpaper on my iPhone -- the former JoBro dropped the first single "Chains" off his debut solo album. And the song is so steamy, I may or may not have had to unbutton my collar -- and possibly my pants too.
"It’s a song that embodies the feeling of being trapped in a love that is hopeless," Jonas told me when we sat down for his first on-camera interview surrounding this venture. "I think it’s a great new sound for me and a really good taste tester for this project."
Since parting ways with his brothers last October, Nick has signed to Island Def Jam, where he's been able to fine-tune his sound and incorporate a genre that's near and dear to his heart: soul.
"That's what I grew up on and that's what feels natural when I open my mouth to sing and so having a pop alternative music bed with the soul vocal, I feel like really works," he explained. "I think this is definitely more of a mature sound as it relates to Jonas Brothers music and Nick Jonas & the Administration."
While Jonas promises "a bunch of songs on the record" to be self-written, he did not pen this particular track. Nonetheless, the singer found no problem identifying with the silky lyrics.
"The story behind 'Chains' is basically that feeling that all people can relate to, it's being trapped. For me specifically in this song, I connected to love and trust and for some people they have said it's broader for them, it's more than love, it can be about anything that entangles you in your life and doesn’t let you do what you need to do to feel free," he said. "I think this is a good fit and I fell in love with the song and I really feel like it has become a staple for this album."
