Meet The Sad Brazilian Superfan, Who Got A Happy World Cup Ending

He made international headlines by giving his replica World Cup trophy away to a German fan...but here's why he's smiling again.

Last week, the story of Clovis Acosta Fernandes — a 59-year-old Brazilian soccer superfan — damn near brought to tears. He’d taken his beloved replica World Cup trophy to the July 4th game…y’know, the one where Germany crushed Brazil 7-1. Fernandes was so depressed by the loss, he gave the trophy away (after holding onto it for a quarter-century) to a nearby German fan, Fritzi Schrader, telling her, “Take it to the final! As you can see, it is not easy, but you deserve it. Congratulations.” The heartfelt images went viral all over the web:

Well, Fritzi apparently couldn’t stand the guilt, and gave the trophy back to Fernandes, because “he is the biggest fan of the Brazilian national team.” He looks pretty happy here:

“I am glad to have the trophy again,” Fernandes told European media. Unfortunately, Fritzi had one condition: If Germany won the World Cup championship, as they did yesterday, Fernandes would have to fork the trophy back over to her. Oh well…he still looks plenty happy here:
