When Rocko dropped his Poet mixtape two weeks ago, he did so both to honor the legendary Maya Angelou, who passed away just days before the tape dropped, and to acknowledge rap as a form of poetry. It was a perfect move, then to get the self-proclaimed "thug poet" Nas on the project.
"That song with Nas, man, it just kinda happened," Rocko told MTV News recently, speaking on their collaboration, "Hustle." "I met him; we hit it off well. We just stayed in touch, and he like, 'Man, send me a song.' So I sent him the song, and he was like, 'Man, this crazy.' He sent it right back."
From there, it was on.
"He was like, 'Send me another song. Send me some more stuff,'" the Atlanta rapper said. Only problem is, Rocko hasn't held up his end of the deal -- yet.
"And I ain't get a chance, really, to send him anything else, and I had that song," he admitted. "He hit me, he was like, 'Man, put that out!'...And I was just waiting for the right time to put it out. With Nas being such a great poet, and us in hip-hop, we look at him as a great poet, so I felt like it was only right to put it on this particular project."
It sounds like the pairing might be right for future projects, too.
"I got a couple records I just did that I feel like fit the type of sound I'm going after now," the Atlanta native said. "This song right here just sets the tone. So, anything we do after this, gotta be crazier than this."
