The film follows Hoult and Stewart, inhabitants of a new society where emotions have been eradicated and a modern breed of humans, called "Equals," exist. A new disease dubbed "Switched on Syndrome" begins to spread, causing people's emotions to return and ultimately resulting in a mandatory quarantine.
"Equals" is set to begin filming this August in Japan and Singapore. Drake Doremus, who worked with Pearce on 2013's "Breathe In," will direct.
Pearce is rounding out his collection of “Twilight” co-stars, currently starring opposite Robert Pattinson in the post-apocalyptic indie film “The Rover.” The A24 release debuted at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and opens in theaters June 20.
