'Star Wars' Watch: Mark Hamill Prepares For 'Episode VII'

Old Man Luke is ready for action.

Production on "Star Wars: Episode VII" is well underway, but right now, star Mark Hamill is breaking out the lightsaber at other venues.

The star of the original "Star Wars" trilogy is teaming up with Disney as part of the "Star Wars Weekends" initiative, an effort to connect with fans who feel the Force. Hamill hasn't started filming "Episode VII" yet, but he's already back in saber-swinging action, with a new ally on his side to boot:

Speaking with the Orlando Sentinel, Hamill opened up about returning to the "Star Wars" universe, playing a much older and wiser Luke Skywalker in J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Episode VII."

"In my mind, there was a beginning, and a middle and an end for me and my association with George’s trilogy," he said. "It was firmly in the past.  When the prequels came out, I watched from a distance, but I was totally fine."

But when "Episode VII" came along, Hamill said he couldn't refuse the opportunity to return as Old Man Luke.

"I would have a lot to answer for if I didn’t at least try to make the effort," he said. "It’s not like I had a choice."

In returning to Luke, Hamill has had to alter his diet and work out to get back into Sith-fighting shape. He's also had the luxury of touring wardrobe and the film's creature shop, as well as reuniting with old pals like Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.

"It was wonderful to see them again, because I didn't expect to," he said. "It's like getting out that pair of pants you haven't worn in five years and finding a 20-dollar bill in the pocket. Oh, this is nice."

"Star Wars: Episode VII" hits theaters on December 15, 2015.
