As Karma and Amy proved on this week's episode of "Faking It," breaking up is hard to do. Karma decided that the best course of action, following the threesome-that-wasn't with Liam, was to finally end the charade with her fake girlfriend, but the BFFs struggled to concoct a reason for going their separate ways. Amy's supposed sex addiction, opposing views on having kids and future college choices were just a few of the ideas that were thrown around as Karma attempted to draw inspiration from various celebrity splits.
In honor of Karmy's public breakup -- and public reconciliation...even though they're still technically broken up -- let's take a look back at five superstar couples that had amicable splits...or were realllly good at faking it.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin: The longtime peas in a pod and parents of two coined a new term when they announced their separation after 10 years of marriage: "conscious uncoupling." Their joint statement, which was posted on the Oscar winner's Goop website, stressed that they will "always will be a family," and that they were "closer than we have ever been."
Faking it? Probably not (but we reserve the right to change our opinion)
The notoriously private pair purposely avoided the expected hoopla that would follow their announcement by getting out of town -- and seemingly enjoying each other's company in the Bahamas. (Where can we sign up for some "conscious uncoupling?) Gwyneth and Chris have also been spotted out and about together in Los Angeles, putting on a united front. Just like Karmy!
Katy Perry and Russell Brand: The quirky lovebirds, who were only married for a year after a whirlwind courtship, announced that they were parting ways in December 2011. Brand released a heartfelt statement at the time, saying, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I will always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”
Faking it? Without a doubt
While Perry kept relatively mum for a while, the truth about the demise of their relationship started to surface after their divorce was set in stone. The pop superstar revealed to People that her busy schedule put a huge strain on their marriage and they had differing views about having children. But the real kicker came later in a Vogue article, in which Perry confessed that her husby officially broke things off via text message! The teens of Hester High would NEVER.
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher: Sure, there was a sizable age difference -- 16 years, in fact -- but in spite of it all, the actors seemed to defy the naysayers for quite some time. But it could only last for so long: In November 2011, Moore announced with "great sadness and a heavy heart" that she was ending her marriage to Kutcher after six years. "As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life," Moore said at the time, while Kutcher tweeted about the separation: "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK." Their divorce was finalized in November 2013 and they haven't been spotted together since.
Faking it? Mayyyybe a lil' bit
The couple was dogged with constant infidelity rumors and the split came on the heels of an alleged Kutcher one-night stand. Moore has had a string of boyfriends since, while Kutcher is engaged and expecting a baby with his "That '70s Show" co-star, Mila Kunis. Maybe Liam is the new Mila?
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt: The Hollywood power couple formally separated after nearly five years of marriage -- and more than seven years together that included countless flawless red carpet appearances -- in January 2005. Two months later, the "Friends" starlet cited "irreconcilable differences" in the divorce papers.
Faking it? Yeppers
Pitt was rumored to be having a relationship with his "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" co-star, Angelina Jolie, when he was still married to Aniston. And, well, y'all know the rest.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette: The "Scream" co-stars separated in November 2010 after 11 years of holy matrimony, and their divorce was finalized three years later. Gale Weathers and Deputy Dewey will forever live in our hearts.
Faking it? Nope, not a bit
Sure, David talking about his and Courtney's sex life the DAY after announcing the separation wasn't ideal, but we'll just ignore that minor detail. The duo have found love with other people -- Cox is dating Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid and Arquette recently welcomed a baby boy with girlfriend Christina McLarty -- and are very committed to co-parenting their daughter, Coco. Not to mention, they still sing each other's praises during press interviews.
