The star of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is taking the Saturday Night Live stage this week — and unlike other Spider-Men, he can speak with an English accent!
Andrew Garfield, sporting a non-spandex outfit and his native English inflection, is featured in a spate of promos for this week's show, which he announced alongside longtime SNL cast member Bobby Moynihan.
One clip showcases the actor's talent for dialects — posh British, American bro, and canine — while another features Moynihan as a "humor doctor" who performs emergency triage on Andrew's performance when it just isn't funny enough. (Emergency triage in this case taking the form of a pair of oversized joke glasses and a little, tiny, whimsical hat.)
And of course, there's a reference to Garfield's girlfriend Emma Stone, as Moynihan explains that her performance on SNL back in 2011 was so epic that the stage is now named after her. Y'know, just FYI, Andrew. No pressure!
Also, despite being best known for wearing the red-and-blue spandex Spidey suit, Garfield is an extremely talented dramatic actor, leading to a last, lengthy, multi-take promo in which he tries to deliver the necessary info — "I'm Andrew Garfield, and I'm hosting Saturday Night Live this week with musical guest Coldplay" — in a heavy, emotional performance. Spoiler alert: It, uh, doesn't work.
"I don't think you were even saying words, there," Moynihan says, wincing.
You can catch Garfield on SNL May 3, one day after the big release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in theaters.
