Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are going head-to-head in this year’s 56th annual Grammys. And while the competition has a lot of people heated, many hip-hop heads just want any win for the genre.
Album of the Year has not seen a hip-hop win since OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below a DECADE ago. And as we pointed out Friday, Kanye West, Eminem and Lil Wayne, some of the biggest names in music today, haven’t won. Jay Z hasn’t even been nominated in the category. An Album win would be historic.
Heavyweights like Eve and Raekwon, rappers who have made their mark in the ’90s and are still going strong, agree. They told MTV News why hip-hop should win.
“There should be somebody from hip-hop who takes home album of the year, 100 percent,” Eve said. “Hip-hop dominates so much.”
Newcomer Mack Wilds told us he has confidence in hip-hop this year.
“As a genre, hip-hop really has a chance at winning big this year,” Mack Wilds said. “If Nas said hip-hop was dead before, she’s alive and kicking now.”
