When 'Reign' Returns Tonight, 'Everything Goes Wrong'

Star Adelaide Kane promises that the love triangle will get 'more intense and more crazy' this season.

If you thought that Mary was in a tight spot when fans last left off with her last on "Reign," star Adelaide Kane promises that things are only going to get harder for her royal small-screen alter ego.

Last we checked in, it seemed like Mary (Kane) and Francis (Toby Regbo) could live in sexy bliss until Nostradamus' prediction that one of her ladies-in-waiting would die comes true (with some help from a masked person). So, Mary decided that it might be best if she leaves Francis (who Nostradamus predicted would die if he marries Mary).

But, she doesn't ride off alone. She is joined by Francis' half-brother Sebastian (Torrance Coombs), her other love interest. Of course, Francis is heartbroken. And, now, that love triangle will play out in a big way as the season progresses. The show returns on Thursday (January 23) after taking a mid-season break.

"That's definitely going to get fully explored. It's gonna get more intense and more crazy and more dramatic and there's going to be more heartbreak," she teased to MTV News.

"I just really like the idea of her with Francis. She's been in love with Francis her whole life... I kind of want them to get together and be happy, at least for a little while. It's the first love of hers and you always want things to work out with your first love," she added, noting that while she enjoys the Mary/ Sebastian relationship, she is rooting for Mary and Francis to eventually walk down the aisle, as planned.

Though, she admits, she doesn't mind having to pretend to be torn between the two of them, if it means having to kiss both Regbo and Coombs for the sake of the show. "You know what? They're both really good-looking boys, so I'm happy however it all plays out," she said. "Like, I'm good. I get to make out with the both of them, I'm happy. Who needs to date when you have those two on set?"

But, the drama isn't reserved for just the love triangle. Kane promises that there will be lots of "intrigue" as the season progresses, and that things "get tricky for everybody, things get really hard for everyone." And while there will be "sunny spots" for some of the characters, Mary "has no funny spots. Ever. She's happy for half an episode and then everything goes wrong."

"Reign" airs at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.
