"21 Jump Street," starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, wasn't afraid to acknowledge that the whole idea for the movie was pretty unoriginal. In an early scene with Nick Offerman's character, Deputy Chief Hardy, the cops explain that "the guys in charge of this stuff lack creativity and are completely out of ideas, so all they do now is recycle sh-- from the past and expect us all not to notice."

The line is a clear self-deprecating jab at TV reboots, and according to Hill, who we spoke at the National Board of Review red carpet, they're not quite done making fun of themselves yet.

Hill confirmed that he had just wrapped on "22 Jump Street," this year's sequel to the surprise comedy hit, and that Jenko and Schmidt aren't leaving behind the self-aware jokes from the first one.

"Self-awareness is the key to the 'Jump Street' movies. In the first one, our self-awareness came in the form of how lazy it was to recycle a TV show idea," he said. "Our self-awareness in the second one comes from the idea that sequels and second missions are always worse and more expensive than first missions, so we are taking really hard shots at ourselves for making a sequel and the idea of a sequel in general."

A little of that knowing humor made its way into the first "22 Jump Street" trailer, where we see Deputy Chief Hardy talking to Schmidt and Jenko, this time about how much money the department is spending on another undercover operation.

So if "22 Jump Street" is upping the ante from the original, it's logical to assume that the movie will feature more Johnny Depp-level cameos, right? There are already rumors abound (and in the video above), but Hill won't confirm or deny what's out there.

"I cannot comment on that," he said.

Take that as you will, but you can find out who's showing up for sure when "22 Jump Street" opens on June 13.
