As 2013 comes to a close, trailers for some of 2014's biggest movies have been debuting in the last few days, giving us an exciting image of what we'll be seeing all throughout the next year. The latest teaser to debut offers a sneak peek at an exciting and dark sci-fi project from Johnny Depp and the man who gave Christopher Nolan's movies their signature look.
Academy Award-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister is taking over the director's seat for the first time with "Transcendence," a sci-fi thriller headed to theaters this spring. In the new teaser trailer, we get a preview of the high-tech story and one sinister final image.
"Transcendence" tells the story of Will Caster, a scientist who specializes in artificial intelligence, as he struggles to create a sentient computer system that encompasses all of human knowledge and then some. The voiceover from the trailer describes the singularity event (or transcendence) when computer intelligence surpasses that of its human creators.
Caster's research into artificial intelligence brings him fame, but it also welcomes enemies. Eventually, his search for knowledge leads him down a dark path, of which we get a preview in the trailer's final image, a sickly looking Depp who appears to have merged with the computer.
For his directorial debut, Pfister has enlisted a few Nolan regulars for the cast, including Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Hall, who plays Caster's wife. Work on "Transcendence" kept Pfister from shooting "Interstellar," which will be Christopher Nolan's first movie with his trusted cinematographer since "Following," his feature debut.
"Transcendence" opens in theaters on April 18, 2014.
