Can you believe it’s been 10 years since Peter Jackson’s first Middle-earth trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings,” came to a close with “The Return of the King,” the installment that went on to win 11 Academy Awards? We can’t either.
Now as much as we like them, “The Hobbit” movies aren’t as good as “The Lord of the Rings.” That’s just how it is.
And while, we very much enjoyed “The Desolation of Smaug,” there’s nothing quite like revisiting the final chapter of “The Lord of the Rings,” and since the 10th anniversary gives us such a great excuse to take a look back, here are our favorite moments from “The Return of the King.”
Trying To See When Practical Effects Gollum Turned Into CGI Gollum
“I think…maybe now…is he CGI? Crap! I missed it.”
Frodo’s Shelob Face
Because nothing says “This spider bite might be infected” like mouth foam.
‘Ghost Army, Y’all!’ – Aragorn
Pro-tip: If you’re outnumbered by the forces of the Dark Lord Sauron, just persuade the undead to pay off their debt to you with a surprise attack.
Because it’s as gross as you remember.
As far as creepy, sad a cappella songs go, it doesn’t get much creepier or sad.
The Death Of The Witch King
It’s a perfect moment of validation for Eowyn and a much-deserved face stabbing the series’ most badass villain.
Legolas Takes Down The Oliphaunt
It was the culmination of an entire trilogy of super-smooth elf moves, and it didn’t disappoint.
Gollum And The Ring Go Down Together
Honestly, it’s probably the best way things could have ended for everyone.
The Deleted “Mouth of Sauron” Scene
Sure, it amounts to another decapitation, but it’s so, so sweet.
‘My friends, you bow to no one.’
We’re not crying. You’re crying.
