With "Sons of Anarchy" set to close its penultimate season on Tuesday (December 10), fans can expect an explosive continuation of the Team Gemma vs. Team Tara saga.
With Tara's plan to remove her boys from Charming finally in full force, actress Katey Sagal (Gemma) says that the repercussions of her onscreen daughter-in-law's actions will play a large part in the finale. Translation: Twitter will be ablaze with debate about which of SAMCRO's leading ladies is superior. Series creator Kurt Sutter added fuel to the fire, tweeting that fans of Team Tara were "smart" while the legions of Team Gemma supporters were "dangerous."
And while no one is closer to Gemma than Sagal herself, the actress — and wife of Sutter — stays diplomatic when it comes to her personal allegiances. (Something the fiercely loyal Gemma would never do.)
"I do love Gemma, I love playing her. I love the psychology behind her," Sagal told MTV News.
"I like to think I'm more dangerous, but I'm also pretty smart, so it's a toss-up," she said. "It's such an interesting thing that there's 'Team one' and 'Team the other,' but I guess that's the fanbase and that's where that goes. I would imagine, though, that there are more dangerous girls watching our show than smart ones — or maybe a combination of both smart and dangerous."
Viewers could argue that Gemma is an intoxicating mix of smart and dangerous herself. This season, writers added a new layer to the MC matriarch: a conscience.
"This season is the most we've seen of her conscience, and so those have been tough places [to go as an actress]," the star confessed. "When you're a person, I would imagine, that lives with a lot of heinous acts around her and in despicable situations, to certainly have some kind of awareness of that — that's uncomfortable truths, as well. All of it's pretty fascinating. It's really interesting to play somebody like her that has so many secrets and walks with all that."
What secrets will Gemma carry with her into season seven? And how will Tara's (Maggie Siff) plan shake out? "Sons of Anarchy's" season six finale, titled "A Mother's Work," airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
